47th Flying Training Wing

• The 47th Flying Training Wing was activated on November 15, 1940, as the 47th Bombardment Group at Savannah Air Base, Georgia. • During World War II, the 47th Bombardment Group flew anti-submarine patrols along the East Coast of the United States. • The 47th Flying Training Wing moved to Texas in 1972 and was redesignated as the 47th Flying Training Wing. • The wing is responsible for training future Air Force pilots through undergraduate pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base. • The 47th Flying Training Wing has a rich history of producing skilled pilots who have gone on to fly a variety of aircraft in the Air Force. • One of the most famous members of the 47th Flying Training Wing was General Robin Olds, a triple ace pilot in World War II and Vietnam. • The wing has received numerous awards and honors for its training and operations, including the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. • In 2018, the 47th Flying Training Wing celebrated its 75th anniversary with a special airshow and other events. • Members of the 47th Flying Training Wing have participated in humanitarian missions around the world, providing aid and support to those in need. • The wing continues to play a vital role in training the next generation of Air Force pilots, ensuring the defense of the United States for years to come.
