The 462nd Field Maintenance Squadron (SAC) was an integral support unit within the Strategic Air Command, responsible for the upkeep and repair of aircraft and equipment essential to nuclear deterrence operations during the Cold War. Activated to provide specialized maintenance for bombers and tankers, the squadron ensured the operational readiness of the 462nd Bombardment Wing's fleet. Stationed at Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas, the unit played a critical role in maintaining the effectiveness and reliability of SAC’s strategic assets. The squadron was eventually inactivated as part of broader organizational changes and base closures in the late 1960s.
