446th Airlift Wing

• The 446th Airlift Wing was activated on August 10, 1943, as the 446th Troop Carrier Group at Baer Field, Indiana. • During World War II, the 446th Troop Carrier Group participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, dropping paratroopers behind enemy lines. • In 1949, the 446th Troop Carrier Group was transferred to McChord Air Force Base in Washington state and was redesignated as the 446th Troop Carrier Wing. • The 446th Troop Carrier Wing was redesignated as the 446th Military Airlift Wing in 1966 and then as the 446th Airlift Wing in 1992. • The 446th Airlift Wing is an Air Force Reserve unit that operates the C-17 Globemaster III, a large military transport aircraft. • In 2006, the 446th Airlift Wing was awarded the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award for its exceptional performance and service. • The 446th Airlift Wing has participated in numerous humanitarian missions, including providing disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. • The 446th Airlift Wing has also supported combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, transporting troops and supplies to and from the region. • In 2014, the 446th Airlift Wing celebrated its 70th anniversary with a reunion of past and present members at McChord Air Force Base. • The 446th Airlift Wing continues to play a crucial role in global airlift operations, supporting both military and humanitarian missions around the world.
