The 42nd Air Refueling Squadron traces its origins to World War II, initially activated in 1942 as part of the U.S. Army Air Forces. Originally serving as a bombardment unit, it was later redesignated and assigned to provide aerial refueling support as part of the Strategic Air Command during the Cold War. Operating aircraft such as the KC-97 Stratofreighter and later the KC-135 Stratotanker, the squadron played a vital role in extending the range and endurance of U.S. bombers and fighters. Throughout its history, the 42nd Air Refueling Squadron participated in numerous operations and exercises, ensuring global reach and rapid response capabilities for the United States Air Force until its inactivation.
