The 4170th Combat Defense Squadron was a United States Air Force unit activated during the early years of the Cold War. Stationed at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota, its primary mission was to provide air base ground defense and security for strategic assets, including bomber and missile operations. The unit was responsible for safeguarding the installation against potential sabotage or ground attacks, reflecting the heightened security concerns of the era. In 1966, as part of a broader USAF reorganization, the 4170th was redesignated and its personnel and mission incorporated into the 321st Combat Defense Squadron.
