366th Fighter Wing

• The 366th Fighter Wing was activated on Feb. 1, 1943, and originally designated as the 366th Fighter Group. • During World War II, the 366th Fighter Group flew P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs in missions over Europe. • The 366th Fighter Wing played a crucial role in the Korean War, flying F-84 Thunderjets on close air support missions. • In 1962, the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing deployed to Thailand to support operations in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. • The wing was redesignated as the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing in 1971 and transitioned to flying the F-111 Aardvark. • In 1994, the wing was reassigned to Air Combat Command and redesignated as the 366th Fighter Wing flying the F-15E Strike Eagle. • The 366th Fighter Wing deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001, flying combat missions against Taliban and Al Qaeda forces. • In 2012, the wing's 391st Fighter Squadron conducted the first ever combat mission using the GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb. • The 366th Fighter Wing has received numerous awards and decorations throughout its history, including the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Combat "V" Device. • Today, the 366th Fighter Wing is based at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho and continues to train and deploy combat-ready forces in support of global contingency operations.
