• Activation and Role: The 351st Strategic Missile Wing (SMW) was activated on 1 February 1963 at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, as part of the United States Air Force's expansion of its Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) force during the Cold War. • Minuteman Missiles: The wing operated the LGM-30B Minuteman I and later the upgraded LGM-30F Minuteman II ICBMs, maintaining a high state of readiness as part of America's nuclear deterrent. • Large Missile Complex: At its peak, the 351st SMW controlled 150 missile silos and 15 launch control centers spread over 14 counties in west-central Missouri, making it one of the largest missile complexes in the United States. • First Missile on Alert: The wing placed its first Minuteman I missile on alert on 29 June 1964, symbolizing its operational capability and contribution to strategic deterrence. • High Security and Secrecy: The locations of the silos and control centers were highly guarded secrets during the Cold War; even locals often did not know the exact nature of the sites near their communities. • Women Missileers: The 351st SMW was among the first missile wings in the Air Force to integrate female missileers (missile launch officers) into its crews, marking a significant milestone for gender integration. • Peacekeeper Program: Although the wing did not receive Peacekeeper missiles, it participated in studies and exercises related to the advanced ICBM program's potential deployment. • Deactivation and Treaty Compliance: The wing was deactivated in July 1995 as part of compliance with the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), marking the end of over three decades of continuous alert status. • Missile Site Preservation: One of the former missile sites, Oscar-01 Launch Control Center, has been preserved as a National Historic Landmark and is open for public tours at Whiteman AFB. • Legacy and Awards: The 351st SMW earned numerous Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards and played a vital role in nuclear deterrence throughout the Cold War, leaving a lasting legacy in U.S. strategic history.
