309th Troop Carrier Wing

The 309th Troop Carrier Wing was activated in the United States Air Force Reserve on August 27, 1949, at Smyrna Air Force Base, Tennessee. Its primary mission was to train Air Force Reserve personnel for tactical airlift operations, using aircraft such as the C-46 Commando. The wing provided vital support during the early years of the Cold War, enhancing the nation’s rapid deployment capabilities.
