About 150th FW

The 150th Fighter Wing (150th FW) is a unit of the New Mexico Air National Guard, based at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Established in 1957, the unit originally flew fighter-interceptor aircraft and has been assigned various aircraft and missions over the decades, including tactical fighter and training roles. The 150th FW gained distinction for its participation in both domestic operations and overseas deployments, supporting missions in Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. In recent years, the unit transitioned to an associate role with the active-duty 58th Special Operations Wing, focusing on training aircrews for special operations and search and rescue missions.

• Origins: The 150th Fighter Wing (150th FW) traces its roots to the 188th Fighter Squadron, established in 1947 as part of the New Mexico Air National Guard. • Korean War Service: Elements of the 188th were federalized and served during the Korean War, providing important air support and training. • Aircraft Evolution: Over its history, the 150th FW operated various aircraft, including the F-80 Shooting Star, F-100 Super Sabre, A-7 Corsair II, and the F-16 Fighting Falcon. • “Tacos” Nickname: Members of the 150th are affectionately known as the “Tacos,” a nod to their New Mexico heritage. • Desert Storm Deployment: In 1991, the 150th FW deployed personnel and aircraft for Operation Desert Storm, supporting coalition operations in the Middle East. • Homeland Defense: After 9/11, the unit played a critical role in Operation Noble Eagle, performing combat air patrol missions to defend U.S. airspace. • Transition to Special Operations: In 2010, the 150th FW began transitioning to a new mission supporting Air Force Special Operations Command, training aircrews for MC-130 and CV-22 operations. • First National Guard Unit with CV-22: The 150th Special Operations Wing became the first Air National Guard unit to support training for the CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. • Community Support: The 150th FW is deeply involved in New Mexico, providing disaster relief, firefighting, and search and rescue missions in the state. • Joint Training Hub: Located at Kirtland Air Force Base, the 150th FW works closely with active-duty Air Force units, making it a model for Total Force Integration.
