• Origins in World War II: The 115th Fighter Wing traces its lineage to the 176th Fighter Squadron, activated in 1948 and originally equipped with P-51 Mustangs, with roots dating back to World War II. • Wisconsin Air National Guard: The unit is part of the Wisconsin Air National Guard and is based at Truax Field Air National Guard Base in Madison, Wisconsin. • Cold War Role: During the Cold War, the 115th served as an air defense unit, flying aircraft like the F-86 Sabre and F-89 Scorpion, standing alert against potential Soviet bomber incursions. • First in State for Jets: The unit was the first in Wisconsin to operate jet aircraft, introducing the F-80 Shooting Star to the state’s skies. • Operation Noble Eagle: After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the 115th provided around-the-clock air defense over the Midwest as part of Operation Noble Eagle. • Deployments Overseas: The 115th has deployed personnel and aircraft in support of major operations including Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Iraqi Freedom. • F-16 Fighting Falcon Era: In 1993, the 115th converted to the F-16 Fighting Falcon, becoming a premier fighter unit within the Air National Guard. • Community Involvement: The 115th is known for its strong community ties, regularly participating in outreach, educational events, and emergency response within Wisconsin. • Environmental Commitment: Truax Field, home of the 115th FW, has received awards for its environmental stewardship and sustainability efforts. • Transition to F-35: In 2020, it was announced that the 115th Fighter Wing would be among the first Air National Guard units to receive the advanced F-35A Lightning II, marking a new era for the unit.
