Robert Brooke
I served as a Naval Corpsman in Vietnam attached to the Third Marines in Golf Company for 10 months. My corpsmen training was at Balboa Hospital in 1967 and Fleet Marine Service School following completion of corpsman training. I then spent six months working on the wards at Bremerton Naval Hospital before being sent to Vietnam. Our company mainly was in the DMZ area near DaNang and Charlie II. I was in Vietnam for almost eleven months, and during that time was in three huge operations. I was in a truck wreck and I survived but that killed six other Marines. When my two years of active duty were done, I was processed out of Treasure Island, CA. I then returned to college where I earned a degree in English and elementary education. I then taught for 12 years all grade levels and spent the last 16 years as a middle school counselor. I currently work as a volunteer for Disabled American Veterans as a service officer helping to process claims and provide information to vets. I visited North Vietnam and Hanoi in 2024 on a trip with two of my cousins, because I wanted to see the changes and how the country looked after fifty five years. I visited war museums and outdoor displays. It was very emotional for me, but I am glad that I went. The country is still very scenic and topography varied. A highlight was traveling the Malong River on a riverboat among the famous seven islands.
