• Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne Division: HHC is the command element of the 1st Brigade Combat Team (BCT), also known as "Bastogne," of the famed 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). • “Bastogne” Nickname: The brigade is nicknamed “Bastogne” in honor of its heroic defense of the Belgian town during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. • D-Day Involvement: Elements of the 1st Brigade were among the first to parachute into Normandy on June 6, 1944, during the D-Day invasion. • Vietnam War Service: The brigade saw heavy combat during the Vietnam War, earning several unit citations and campaign streamers. • Operation Desert Storm: The 1st Brigade was deployed to Southwest Asia in 1990-1991, where it participated in the liberation of Kuwait. • Operation Iraqi Freedom: HHC 1st Brigade deployed multiple times to Iraq, providing command and control for the brigade’s operations during key phases of the conflict. • Operation Enduring Freedom: The brigade, including HHC, has seen multiple deployments to Afghanistan, supporting counterinsurgency and nation-building missions. • Distinct Unit Insignia: The 1st Brigade's insignia features the “Bastogne” tab and the eagle head of the 101st, signifying its heritage as part of the “Screaming Eagles.” • First to be Air Assault Qualified: The 101st Airborne Division is the Army’s only air assault division, and HHC 1st Brigade personnel are among the first in the Army to be air assault qualified. • Modern Deployments: In recent years, HHC 1st Brigade has participated in joint training exercises with NATO allies and has supported hurricane relief efforts in the United States.
