• Origins at Sheppard AFB: The 82nd Security Police Squadron was originally activated at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, providing security and law enforcement for one of the Air Force’s largest technical training centers. • Cold War Guardians: During the Cold War, the 82nd Security Police played a vital role in base defense, constantly training for potential threats and nuclear security scenarios amidst heightened tensions. • Vietnam Era Duties: Members of the 82nd Security Police were deployed to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, where they provided air base defense and participated in “Safe Side” training for combat security operations. • Presidential Protection: The unit has, on several occasions, supported Secret Service missions for visiting U.S. Presidents and dignitaries transiting through Sheppard AFB. • Operation Desert Storm Support: During the Gulf War in 1991, the 82nd Security Police provided force protection and secured deploying personnel and resources in support of Operation Desert Storm. • Transition to Security Forces: In 1997, the Air Force re-designated Security Police units as Security Forces, broadening their mission from law enforcement to a more robust force protection role, including antiterrorism and base defense. • K-9 Teams: The 82nd Security Police has maintained highly trained military working dog teams, which have been deployed for explosives detection at major events and overseas operations. • Community Engagement: The squadron annually participates in National Night Out and other community policing programs, fostering positive relations between the military and local civilian communities. • Response to 9/11: In the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, the 82nd Security Police rapidly increased force protection postures and implemented new security protocols to safeguard Sheppard AFB. • Decorated Service: The unit and its members have received numerous Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards for excellence in mission accomplishment, innovation, and operational performance.
