  • The first successful military submarine was invented by David Bushnell in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. It was called the Turtle and was used in an attempt to attach a time bomb to the hull of a British warship.
  • The first submarine to sink a warship in combat was the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley during the Civil War. It sunk the USS Housatonic off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina in 1864.
