• Oldest Air National Guard Unit: The Minnesota Air National Guard (MN ANG) is home to the 109th Airlift Squadron, which traces its roots back to 1921, making it one of the oldest Air National Guard flying units in the United States. • World War II Service: During World War II, Minnesota ANG units were federalized and served in various combat and support roles, including anti-submarine patrols and bomber escort missions. • Cold War Air Defense: The 133rd Fighter Wing flew air defense missions over the upper Midwest during the Cold War, operating aircraft such as the F-51 Mustang, F-94 Starfire, and F-89 Scorpion. • Global Humanitarian Missions: The 133rd Airlift Wing and 148th Fighter Wing have participated in numerous humanitarian missions worldwide, providing aid and disaster relief in places like Haiti, the Philippines, and following Hurricane Katrina. • Transition to Airlift Missions: The 133rd switched from fighter jets to airlift missions in the early 1970s, transitioning to the C-130 Hercules, which it still operates today. • Duluth’s “Bulldogs”: The 148th Fighter Wing, based in Duluth, is nicknamed the “Bulldogs” and currently operates the F-16 Fighting Falcon in air defense roles. • 9/11 Response: Within hours of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Minnesota ANG units scrambled to provide air defense coverage and support for Operation Noble Eagle. • All-Female Deployment: In 2018, the 133rd Airlift Wing made history with an all-female C-130 flight crew deployment to support operations in the Middle East. • State Emergency Support: The Minnesota ANG regularly supports the state during emergencies, including flood response, wildfire suppression, and the COVID-19 pandemic. • Decorated Units: Minnesota ANG units have received numerous awards for excellence, including the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, reflecting their high level of performance and readiness.
