• Origins as Topeka Army Airfield: Forbes Air Force Base, originally known as Topeka Army Airfield, was activated in 1942 as a training facility for bomber crews during World War II. • Renamed for a Hero: In 1948, the base was renamed Forbes AFB in honor of Major Daniel H.
