About Pennsylvania Air National Guard

The Pennsylvania Air National Guard (PA ANG) was officially established in 1947 as a component of the newly formed United States Air Force and the broader National Guard system. Its origins trace back to earlier aviation units formed in Pennsylvania during World War I and World War II, notably the 103rd Observation Squadron activated in 1924. The PA ANG has participated in major conflicts including the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, and the Global War on Terrorism, providing airlift, air refueling, and tactical support. Today, its units, such as the 111th Attack Wing and 171st Air Refueling Wing, continue to support both federal missions and state emergency operations.

Oldest Air National Guard Unit: The Pennsylvania Air National Guard (PA ANG) is home to the 103rd Observation Squadron, which was federally recognized on 27 June 1924, making it one of the oldest continuously serving Air National Guard units in the United States.
World War II Service: During World War II, Pennsylvania ANG units were mobilized and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters, providing reconnaissance, fighter escort, and air support missions.
Cold War Air Defense: The 112th Fighter Group, based in Pittsburgh, played a critical role in continental air defense during the Cold War, flying aircraft such as the F-86 Sabre and later the F-102 Delta Dagger.
Hurricane Katrina Relief: Pennsylvania Air National Guard members played a major role in humanitarian relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, delivering supplies and assisting with rescue operations.
