History of 934th Airlift Wing

The 934th Airlift Wing, based at Minneapolis-St. Paul Air Reserve Station in Minnesota, was established in 1963 as part of the Air Force Reserve. Originally equipped with the C-119 Flying Boxcar, the wing transitioned over the years to modern aircraft, currently operating the C-130H Hercules to provide tactical airlift capabilities. The 934th has supported numerous operations, including Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and humanitarian missions worldwide. As Minnesota’s only Air Force Reserve unit, the 934th continues to play a vital role in both national defense and disaster response efforts.

ABOUT 934th Airlift Wing

  • Formation and Designation: The 934th Airlift Wing was originally established as the 934th Troop Carrier Group in 1963 and later redesignated as the 934th Airlift Wing in 1994.
  • Location: The unit is based at Minneapolis–Saint Paul Joint Air Reserve Station, Minnesota, making it the only Air Force Reserve flying unit in the state.
  • Aircraft Operated: The 934th Airlift Wing flies the Lockheed C-130H Hercules, a versatile tactical airlifter known for its ability to operate from short and unprepared runways.

  • Community Involvement: The 934th has a longstanding tradition of community service, including supporting local veterans’ events, educational outreach, and public airshows.
  • Women in Command: In 2016, Colonel Sandra Best became the first female commander of the 934th Airlift Wing, marking a significant milestone in the unit’s history.
