History of 2:5th Cavalry

The 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment (2/5th Cavalry) is a distinguished unit of the United States Army, with its origins dating back to the Indian Wars of the 19th century. During the Vietnam War, 2/5th Cavalry served as part of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), participating in major operations such as the battles of Ia Drang and Hue, earning numerous unit citations for valor and gallantry. In more recent history, the battalion has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, conducting counterinsurgency and stability operations as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Renowned for its adaptability and fighting spirit, 2/5th Cavalry continues to uphold its proud legacy as a frontline combat unit in the U.S. Army.

ABOUT 2:5th Cavalry

  • Origins in World War I: The 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment (2/5th Cavalry) was originally constituted in 1855 as part of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, seeing its early service in the American West and later actions during the Civil War.
  • PACIFIC THEATER IN WWII: Elements of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, including 2/5th Cavalry, were part of the 1st Cavalry Division and played a significant role in the liberation of the Philippines, particularly during the Battle of Manila in 1945.
  • First into Manila: In February 1945, the 2/5th Cavalry was among the first U.S. units to enter Manila, liberating American internees at the University of Santo Tomas.
  • Korean War Valor: The battalion saw heavy fighting in Korea, including at the pivotal Battle of Yongdong and the defense of the Pusan Perimeter.
  • Vietnam War Action: 2/5th Cavalry became an “air cavalry” unit in Vietnam, using helicopters for reconnaissance and rapid deployment, and participated in major operations like the Ia Drang Valley in 1965.

  • Cold War Deployments: During the Cold War, 2/5th Cavalry was stationed in Germany as part of NATO forces, prepared to defend against potential Soviet aggression.
  • Operation Desert Storm: The battalion deployed to the Middle East in 1991, participating in the liberation of Kuwait as part of the 1st Cavalry Division’s “left hook” maneuver.
  • Modern Era Service: 2/5th Cavalry has served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, adapting from traditional armored cavalry to mechanized infantry missions and counterinsurgency operations.
