ABOUT 2:5th Cavalry
- Origins in World War I: The 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment (2/5th Cavalry) was originally constituted in 1855 as part of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, seeing its early service in the American West and later actions during the Civil War.
- PACIFIC THEATER IN WWII: Elements of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, including 2/5th Cavalry, were part of the 1st Cavalry Division and played a significant role in the liberation of the Philippines, particularly during the Battle of Manila in 1945.
- First into Manila: In February 1945, the 2/5th Cavalry was among the first U.S. units to enter Manila, liberating American internees at the University of Santo Tomas.
- Korean War Valor: The battalion saw heavy fighting in Korea, including at the pivotal Battle of Yongdong and the defense of the Pusan Perimeter.
