ABOUT Ranger Regimental Reconnaissance Company
- Origins as a Specialized Unit: The Ranger Regimental Reconnaissance Company (RRC), formerly known as the Regimental Reconnaissance Detachment (RRD), was established in 1984 as a specialized unit within the 75th Ranger Regiment to provide deep reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities.
- Direct Support to JSOC: RRC is one of only three special reconnaissance units in the U.S. military that directly support the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), alongside Delta Force's reconnaissance troops and the Navy's SEAL Team 6 recce operators.
- Selection and Training: The RRC selection process is notoriously grueling and is open only to experienced Rangers. Only a handful of candidates successfully complete the selection and subsequent specialized training each year.
- Deep Reconnaissance Missions: RRC operators often operate far behind enemy lines, gathering intelligence, conducting surveillance, and providing target acquisition for high-value missions.
- Role in Operation Enduring Freedom: During the Afghanistan War, RRC teams conducted reconnaissance and surveillance ahead of major Ranger and JSOC operations, including the hunt for Osama bin Laden and other high-profile targets.
- Advanced Technology: RRC employs some of the most advanced surveillance and communications equipment in the U.S. military, including sophisticated drones, sensors, and secure satellite communications.
- Pathfinder Capability: RRC teams are often tasked with pathfinder missions, such as securing and marking drop zones and landing zones for follow-on forces, sometimes parachuting in under cover of darkness.
- Limited Public Information: Due to the sensitive and classified nature of their operations, very little is officially published about RRC, and most of their missions remain undisclosed to the public.
- Global Deployments: RRC has operated in multiple theaters beyond Afghanistan and Iraq, including the Balkans, Africa, and other undisclosed locations in support of U.S. special operations.
- Integration with Elite Forces: RRC frequently works alongside other Tier 1 units, such as Delta Force and SEAL Team 6, providing them with actionable intelligence and setting the conditions for successful direct action missions.
