Kadena Air Base
U.S. Air Force
Kadena Air Base, located on the island of Okinawa, Japan, has been a pivotal installation for the United States Air Force since its establishment in 1945 following the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. Originally built by the Imperial Japanese Army, the base was seized and rapidly expanded by American forces, soon becoming a major strategic hub during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Over the decades, Kadena has hosted numerous units, most notably the 18th Wing, the Air Force’s largest combat wing, and has played a crucial role in regional deterrence and rapid response operations. Today, Kadena Air Base continues to serve as a cornerstone of U.S. military presence in the Pacific, supporting both American and allied air operations throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
75 FIS Dow AF Base Bangor Maine
U.S. Air Force
The 75th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (75 FIS) was an Air Defense Command unit stationed at Dow Air Force Base, Bangor, Maine, during the Cold War. Activated at Dow AFB in 1955, the squadron was equipped with various interceptor aircraft, including the F-86D Sabre and later the F-101B Voodoo, to defend the northeastern United States against potential Soviet bomber attacks. The 75 FIS played a crucial role in North American air defense, standing alert for quick-response interception missions. The unit remained active at Dow AFB until it was inactivated in 1968 as part of a broader reorganization of US air defense forces.
4th Tactical Fighter Group
U.S. Air Force
The 4th Tactical Fighter Group traces its origins to World War II, initially activated as the 4th Fighter Group in 1942, composed largely of American volunteers from the Royal Air Force “Eagle Squadrons.” Renowned for flying P-47 Thunderbolts and later P-51 Mustangs, the group became one of the highest-scoring units in the European Theater, credited with over 1,000 enemy aircraft destroyed. During the Cold War, it was redesignated as the 4th Tactical Fighter Group, transitioning to jet aircraft such as the F-86 Sabre and later the F-4 Phantom II, and participated in major operations including the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The unit’s legacy of excellence continues today as the 4th Fighter Wing, based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina.
Korat air force base Thailand
U.S. Air Force
Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, located in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand, has played a significant role in regional military history. During the Vietnam War, it was a key United States Air Force (USAF) installation, hosting units such as the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing and serving as a base for F-105 Thunderchief and F-4 Phantom II combat operations over Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The base supported a wide range of missions, including interdiction, close air support, and air defense suppression. After the end of major U.S. operations in Southeast Asia, Korat was returned to the Royal Thai Air Force and continues to serve as an important Thai military installation today.
