The 17th Cavalry Regiment was originally constituted in the Regular Army in 1916 and has a storied history of service in the United States Army. Throughout the 20th century, the 17th Cav served in major conflicts, including World War II, the Korean War, and especially the Vietnam War, where its squadrons provided reconnaissance and security for a range of Army divisions. During Vietnam, the regiment became well-known for its use of air cavalry tactics, employing helicopters for rapid mobility and battlefield surveillance. In the modern era, elements of the 17th Cavalry have continued to serve as part of Army aviation brigades, supporting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other theaters.

101st Airborne
