The 57th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (57th FIS), known as "The Black Knights of Keflavik," was stationed at Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland, from 1954 to 1995. Tasked with the air defense of Iceland and the North Atlantic, the unit operated various interceptor aircraft, including the F-89 Scorpion, F-102 Delta Dagger, and most notably the F-4 Phantom II and F-15 Eagle. The 57th FIS played a critical role during the Cold War, routinely intercepting and identifying Soviet aircraft probing NATO airspace. The squadron was inactivated in March 1995, marking the end of a significant chapter in the United States’ aerial defense of the North Atlantic region.

The 40th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (A&E), commonly referred to as the 40th A&E, traces its origins to the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, where it provided essential armament and electrical maintenance support for bomber and fighter units. Throughout the Cold War, the unit adapted to advancing aviation technology, ensuring mission readiness for a variety of aircraft platforms. The 40th A&E played a critical support role in major operations, including deployments during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The 48th Fighter Wing, known as the "Liberty Wing," is a distinguished United States Air Force unit based at RAF Lakenheath, England. Originally activated in 1948, the wing has a storied legacy, having flown combat missions in major conflicts including the Korean War, Operation Desert Storm, and ongoing operations supporting NATO. Over the decades, the 48th has operated various fighter aircraft, most notably the F-111 and the F-15, and recently became the first USAF unit in Europe to operate the advanced F-35A Lightning II.
