Harold Schoof

The 862nd Air Division was an organizational unit of the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command (SAC), activated in January 1958 at Amarillo Air Force Base, Texas. Its primary mission was to oversee the training and operational readiness of B-52 Stratofortress bomber wings and KC-135 Stratotanker refueling units, supporting SAC's strategic bombing and deterrence objectives during the early Cold War. The division played a key role in managing unit deployments and maintaining alert status to ensure rapid response capabilities. It was inactivated in July 1966 as part of a broader SAC reorganization and changes in strategic force structure.
