• Namesake: USS White Plains (AFS-4) was named after the Battle of White Plains, a significant engagement during the American Revolutionary War in 1776. • Commissioning: The ship was commissioned on 23 November 1968 at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. • Class: White Plains was a Mars-class combat stores ship, designed to provide underway replenishment of food, spare parts, and other supplies to the fleet. • Vietnam War Service: The ship supported U.S. Navy operations during the Vietnam War, delivering supplies to ships operating in the combat zone. • Typhoon Incident: In 1972, while en route to Subic Bay, USS White Plains survived Typhoon Rita, where the ship battled 70-foot waves and hurricane-force winds, sustaining damage but continuing its mission. • Explosive Mishap: On 9 May 1975, a major fire broke out in the engine room while the ship was preparing to supply the fleet.
