• Origins and Nickname: Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 51 (HSL-51), known as the "Warlords," was established on 3 October 1991 at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan. • Forward-Deployed Squadron: HSL-51 was the U.S. Navy’s only forward-deployed LAMPS (Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System) helicopter squadron, supporting the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. • Aircraft Operated: The squadron initially operated the Sikorsky SH-60B Seahawk helicopter, known for its versatility in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. • Carrier and Ship Deployments: HSL-51 detachments were routinely deployed aboard U.S. Navy cruisers, destroyers, and frigates based in Japan, providing critical aviation support. • First to Transition: HSL-51 was one of the first squadrons to transition to the MH-60R Seahawk, enhancing its anti-submarine warfare and surveillance capabilities. • Humanitarian Assistance: The squadron participated in humanitarian missions, including relief operations after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. • Multiple Awards: HSL-51 has been recognized multiple times with the Battle "E" (Efficiency) Award, Safety "S" Award, and the Golden Wrench Award for maintenance excellence. • International Exercises: The Warlords have participated in numerous multinational exercises, such as RIMPAC, Cobra Gold, and Keen Sword, strengthening alliances in the region. • Redesignation: In April 2013, HSL-51 was redesignated as Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 51 (HSM-51) to reflect its expanded mission set with the MH-60R Seahawk. • Legacy and Motto: The squadron’s motto, “Warlords, Always Ready, Always There,” reflects its reputation for rapid deployment, operational excellence, and unwavering support to the fleet.
