• Establishment: Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 37 (HSL-37), also known as the "Easyriders," was established on July 3, 1975, at Naval Air Station Barbers Point, Hawaii. • First SH-2F Squadron in Pacific: HSL-37 was the first US Navy squadron in the Pacific Fleet to operate the SH-2F Seasprite helicopter, a key platform for anti-submarine warfare (ASW). • Support for Surface Combatants: The squadron’s primary mission was to deploy detachments aboard surface combatants, such as frigates and destroyers, providing them with vital ASW and anti-surface warfare capabilities. • Home Base Move: In 1999, following the closure of NAS Barbers Point, HSL-37 relocated to Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. • Transition to SH-60B: In 1992, HSL-37 transitioned from the SH-2F Seasprite to the more advanced SH-60B Seahawk helicopter, enhancing its operational capabilities. • Humanitarian Missions: Beyond combat operations, HSL-37 has participated in numerous humanitarian missions, including disaster relief operations throughout the Pacific region. • Longest Continually Operating Helicopter Squadron in Hawaii: HSL-37 holds the distinction of being the longest continually operating helicopter squadron in the Hawaiian Islands. • Nickname and Insignia: The squadron’s nickname, "Easyriders," and its distinctive insignia featuring a winged motorcycle, reflect its spirit and adaptability. • Redesignation: On October 1, 2013, HSL-37 was redesignated as Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 37 (HSM-37) as it transitioned to the MH-60R Seahawk, further expanding its mission set. • Key Role in RIMPAC: HSL-37/HSM-37 has been a regular participant in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise, showcasing interoperability with allied navies.
