• Core Mission: The Transportation Company (TrkCo) of Headquarters & Service Battalion (H&SBn), 1st Force Service Regiment (FSR), later 1st Force Logistics Command (FLC), provided essential motor transport support to the 1st Marine Division and I Marine Amphibious Force during the Vietnam War. • Nickname: TrkCo was often colloquially referred to as the "Truck Company" among Marines and support personnel, emphasizing their vital logistical role. • Vietnam Operations: TrkCo, 1st FSR/FLC was heavily involved in convoy operations from Da Nang to forward combat bases such as Chu Lai, Phu Bai, and Khe Sanh, often under threat from ambushes and mines. • Route Security: Because of frequent enemy activity, TrkCo convoys were often escorted by Marine security elements and sometimes mounted M60 machine guns on their trucks for self-defense. • Red Ball Express: Inspired by the famous WWII Red Ball Express, TrkCo ran high-priority "Red Ball" convoys to deliver critical supplies under tight deadlines during major operations like Tet Offensive. • Heroic Actions: Members of TrkCo were awarded several commendations for bravery, including Navy Commendation Medals and Purple Hearts, due to their actions during ambushes and mine attacks on convoys. • Adapted Vehicles: The company’s fleet included not just standard 2.5-ton and 5-ton trucks, but also “gun trucks”—cargo trucks armored with sandbags and steel plating to improve survivability. • Engineering Support: TrkCo worked closely with Marine engineers to maintain and repair supply routes, including the vital “Liberty Road” between Da Nang and outlying bases. • Unit Evolution: The original 1st FSR was redesignated as 1st Force Logistics Command (FLC) in March 1970, but TrkCo continued its mission throughout the Vietnam War and into postwar restructuring. • Legacy: Veterans of TrkCo, H&SBn, 1st FSR/FLC maintain reunions and share their stories, preserving the history of Marine Corps logistics and the critical “lifeline” role they played in Vietnam.
