• World War II Origins: NMCB-21, originally known as the 121st Naval Construction Battalion, was officially commissioned on July 13, 1942, during World War II to support the U.S. Navy’s construction needs. • European Theater Service: Unlike many Seabee battalions deployed to the Pacific, NMCB-21 was one of the few units sent to Europe, participating in the Normandy Invasion (D-Day) and constructing critical infrastructure on Omaha Beach. • Omaha Beach Construction: The battalion was instrumental in building and maintaining the artificial Mulberry harbor at Omaha Beach, allowing supplies and reinforcements to land after D-Day. • Decorated Service: In recognition of its heroic efforts during the Normandy landings, NMCB-21 received the Navy Unit Commendation for exceptional service under fire. • Postwar Deactivation: After World War II, NMCB-21 was decommissioned as part of the general drawdown of U.S. military forces. • Cold War Reactivation: The battalion was reactivated in 1967 as part of the Naval Reserve Force, reflecting increased Cold War tensions and the need for readiness. • Gulf War Mobilization: NMCB-21 was mobilized during Operation Desert Storm in 1990–1991, deploying Seabees to support operations in the Middle East. • Global War on Terror: The unit provided construction, humanitarian, and force protection support during deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and other regions in the 21st century. • Disaster Relief Missions: NMCB-21 has participated in domestic and international disaster relief operations, including rebuilding efforts after hurricanes and other natural disasters. • Civic Action Projects: The battalion has a proud tradition of assisting communities by constructing schools, clinics, and infrastructure during peacetime training missions, strengthening U.S. relationships abroad.
