• Origins: Mobile Construction Battalion Nine (MCB-9), also known as "Seabees," was first commissioned during World War II on July 15, 1942, at Camp Allen, Norfolk, Virginia. • World War II Service: MCB-9 was deployed to the Pacific Theater, participating in the construction of advance bases in locations such as Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Manus, and the Philippines, playing a crucial role in supporting Allied operations. • Korean War Contributions: Reactivated for the Korean War, MCB-9 was sent to Japan and Korea, where they built airfields, roads, and support facilities essential for United Nations forces. • Vietnam War Deployments: The battalion served multiple tours in Vietnam, constructing bases, airfields, and fortifications under hazardous conditions, particularly at Da Nang, Chu Lai, and Phu Bai. • Nickname "Striking Ninth": MCB-9 earned the nickname "Striking Ninth" for its reputation as a highly mobile and effective construction unit, often being one of the first Seabee battalions deployed to new and dangerous locations. • Humanitarian Missions: Outside of combat, MCB-9 engaged in numerous humanitarian projects, including building schools, clinics, and infrastructure in locations like the Philippines, Diego Garcia, and Okinawa. • Battle Efficiency Awards: The battalion received multiple "Battle E" awards for efficiency and excellence, highlighting its distinguished record among Seabee units. • Operation Deep Freeze: MCB-9 participated in Operation Deep Freeze, the U.S. mission to Antarctica, helping construct scientific research stations in some of the harshest conditions on earth. • Decommissioning and Legacy: MCB-9 was decommissioned in 1994, but its legacy continues through its alumni and in historical commemorations by Seabee organizations. • Symbolic Mascot: The battalion's mascot was a fierce bee wielding a hammer and wrench, symbolizing the Seabee motto: "We Build, We Fight."
