• Formation: HMLA-269, known as the "Gunrunners," was activated on February 22, 1971, at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina. • First AH-1J SeaCobras: The squadron became the first operational Marine Corps helicopter unit to receive and employ the AH-1J SeaCobra attack helicopter. • Vietnam War Support: Though activated after the main U.S. withdrawal, HMLA-269 supported Marine units with training and readiness for operations connected to Southeast Asia. • Expanding Capabilities: In 1986, the unit expanded from HMA-269 (Attack Helicopter Squadron) to HMLA-269 (Light Attack Helicopter Squadron) with the addition of the UH-1N utility helicopters, allowing greater mission versatility. • Operation Desert Storm: Deployed to Southwest Asia in 1990-91, HMLA-269 played a critical combat role in Operation Desert Storm, providing close air support and escort missions. • Bosnia and Kosovo: The squadron supported NATO operations during the 1990s, including missions in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo, providing armed reconnaissance and support for peacekeeping operations. • Operation Iraqi Freedom: HMLA-269 deployed multiple times to Iraq, supporting ground forces with attack and utility helicopter missions, notably during the initial 2003 invasion and subsequent operations. • Distinguished Awards: The "Gunrunners" have received several unit awards, including the Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Unit Commendation, highlighting their excellence in combat and support roles. • Transition to New Aircraft: Over its history, HMLA-269 has operated several helicopter types, including the AH-1J, AH-1T, AH-1W Super Cobra, and the modern AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom. • Deactivation: After more than 50 years of service, HMLA-269 was deactivated in December 2022 as part of USMC force restructuring, marking the end of a storied legacy.
