• Origins: The 8th Motor Transport Battalion, commonly known as "8th Motors," was activated in 1950 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and assigned to the 2nd Force Service Support Group (2nd FSSG). • Korean War Roots: Although activated during the Korean War period, the battalion primarily served in a support and training role at home, preparing Marines and equipment for overseas deployment. • Vietnam Era Support: During the Vietnam War, 8th Motors played a crucial role in logistics and transportation, supporting Marine units by ensuring timely movement of personnel, equipment, and supplies. • Desert Shield/Desert Storm: The battalion was deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, providing vital motor transport support during the liberation of Kuwait in 1990-91. • Hurricane Hugo Response: In 1989, 8th Motors assisted with disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo, demonstrating its versatility beyond combat operations. • Motto and Mascot: The battalion’s motto was "Drive On," reflecting its mission and ethos. The mascot was a bulldog named "Motor," symbolizing toughness and determination. • Operation Provide Comfort: Elements of 8th Motors participated in Operation Provide Comfort in northern Iraq and Turkey, supporting humanitarian relief for Kurdish refugees in 1991. • Training Excellence: 8th Motors was known for its rigorous training programs, producing some of the Marine Corps’ most skilled motor vehicle operators and mechanics. • Integration with 2nd FSSG: As part of 2nd FSSG, 8th Motors regularly supported major Marine Corps exercises and deployments, providing lift capability for the entire II Marine Expeditionary Force. • Deactivation and Legacy: The battalion was deactivated in 2000 as part of a reorganization of Marine Corps logistics units, but its traditions and lineage continue in successor units within the Marine Logistics Group.
