• Origins: The 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit Service Support Group (22d MSSG), now known as Combat Logistics Battalion 22 (CLB-22), was originally activated in 1982 to provide logistical support for the 22d Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). • First in Lebanon: The 22d MSSG was part of the 22d MAU (Marine Amphibious Unit) during the 1983 Beirut deployment, providing critical logistics support during the Multinational Force operations. • Grenada Operation: In October 1983, elements of the 22d MSSG participated in Operation Urgent Fury to rescue American students in Grenada, delivering supplies and medical aid under fire. • Desert Storm: The 22d MSSG deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, enabling the MEU’s rapid maneuver and sustainment in the harsh desert environment. • Humanitarian Missions: The 22d MSSG has supported numerous humanitarian operations, including disaster relief in Bangladesh (1991) and Haiti (1994), providing food, water, and medical care. • Balkans Deployments: The unit played a pivotal role in Operation Deny Flight and Operation Provide Promise in the Balkans during the early 1990s, supporting peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts. • Operation Iraqi Freedom: In 2004, the 22d MSSG supported combat and stability operations in Iraq, maintaining high operational tempo and supply chains under combat conditions. • Afghanistan Service: The 22d MSSG deployed to Helmand Province in 2009, providing vital logistics for Marine combat operations, including convoy security, supply distribution, and vehicle maintenance. • Adaptation and Innovation: The unit has been recognized for its innovative use of logistics in amphibious and expeditionary operations, setting the standard for Marine logistics support groups Navy-wide. • Unit Redesignations: Over its history, the 22d MSSG has been redesignated several times, reflecting its evolving mission; today, as CLB-22, it is an integral part of the 22d MEU, continuing its legacy of support “From the Sea.”
