1:2nd Marines

• The 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines was activated on February 8, 1911 at the Marine Barracks, Navy Yard, Norfolk, Virginia. • During World War I, the 2nd Marines participated in the Battle of Belleau Wood where they earned the nickname "The Old Reliables". • In World War II, the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines fought in the Battle of Tarawa and the Battle of Saipan. • The 2nd Marines was deactivated in 1946, but was reactivated in 1986 as part of the Marine Corps' restructuring. • In 2001, the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. • In 2004, the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines was part of the assault on Fallujah during Operation Iraqi Freedom. • In 2010, the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan to conduct counterinsurgency operations. • The 2nd Marines have been awarded numerous decorations for their service, including the Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Unit Commendation. • The motto of the 2nd Marines is "Second to None", reflecting their dedication to excellence and service. • The 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines continues to serve as an integral part of the Marine Corps, ready to deploy at a moment's notice in defense of the nation.
