• Founding and Location: USCG Headquarters, officially known as United States Coast Guard Headquarters, is located at St. Elizabeths West Campus in Washington, D.C. It moved to this modern facility in 2013 after decades in various locations. • Historic Home: Before moving to St. Elizabeths, USCG Headquarters was located in the Buzzard Point area of Washington, D.C., occupying the Transpoint Building from 1979 to 2013. • Largest Coast Guard Facility: The St. Elizabeths headquarters is the largest facility ever constructed for the Coast Guard, housing over 3,700 personnel and covering 1.1 million square feet. • Interagency Proximity: The new headquarters shares the grounds with the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard’s parent agency since 2003, fostering closer interagency collaboration. • Historic Site: The St. Elizabeths campus is a National Historic Landmark, originally established as a government hospital for the insane in the 19th century, giving the headquarters unique architectural and historical significance. • Command Center: USCG Headquarters is home to the Coast Guard Command Center, which monitors and responds to emergencies worldwide, including search and rescue, environmental disasters, and national security incidents. • Coast Guard Leadership: The offices of the Commandant of the Coast Guard and other senior leaders are based at headquarters, making it the nerve center for policy, operations, and administration. • Symbolic Sculpture: At the entrance of the headquarters stands the Coast Guard Memorial, featuring the service’s motto “Semper Paratus” (“Always Ready”), honoring all who served. • Architectural Design: The new headquarters was designed to blend with the historic landscape, incorporating green roofs, energy-efficient features, and preserving much of the original campus character. • Historic Transitions: The move to the St. Elizabeths campus marked the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter, uniting the Coast Guard’s leadership and mission support activities under one roof for the first time in its modern history.
