Port Security Unit 305

• Establishment and Mission: Port Security Unit 305 (PSU 305) was commissioned in 1995 and is based in Fort Eustis, Virginia. Its primary mission is to provide waterside and landside security in support of military operations in ports and harbors, both domestically and overseas. • Reserve Component: PSU 305 is a U.S. Coast Guard Reserve unit, composed mainly of reservists who are trained and ready to deploy worldwide on short notice for contingency operations. • Afghanistan Deployment: In 2011, PSU 305 deployed to Camp Patriot, Kuwait, and supported Operation Enduring Freedom, providing vital port security for military logistics and supply routes into Afghanistan. • Hurricane Katrina Response: Members of PSU 305 were part of the Coast Guard’s response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, assisting with port security and humanitarian relief efforts in the Gulf Coast region. • 9/11 Security Operations: Following the September 11 attacks, PSU 305 rapidly mobilized to provide increased security at key ports along the U.S. East Coast, including New York and New Jersey. • International Exercises: PSU 305 regularly participates in joint military exercises, such as the annual "Exercise Patriot Defender" and multinational operations, enhancing interoperability with the U.S. Navy, Army, and allied forces. • Specialized Capability: The unit is equipped with Transportable Port Security Boats (TPSBs), which are fast, maneuverable craft designed for maritime interdiction, force protection, and surveillance in challenging environments. • Decorations: PSU 305 and its members have received numerous awards, including Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendations, for their outstanding operational performance and contributions to national security. • First Female CO: In 2019, PSU 305 appointed its first female commanding officer, marking a significant milestone in Coast Guard Reserve leadership and gender integration. • Community Engagement: The unit is active in community service, regularly participating in local events, memorials, and veteran outreach programs in the Hampton Roads area.
