• Origins in Desert Shield: The Gulf Strike Team (GST) was initially established in 1973 by the U.S. Coast Guard in response to the need for rapid oil spill response capabilities after the environmental impacts of offshore drilling and tanker incidents in the Gulf of Mexico. • First Major Response: GST's first significant deployment was for the IXTOC I oil spill in 1979, one of the largest oil spills in history, where the team managed oil containment and recovery operations in the Gulf of Mexico. • Multinational Cooperation: GST has worked alongside Mexican and Caribbean authorities during transnational incidents, fostering strong international relationships and joint training exercises. • All-Hazard Capability: Although created for oil spill response, GST expanded its mission to include hazardous materials response, hurricane recovery, and chemical spill containment. • Deepwater Horizon Response: The Gulf Strike Team played a critical role in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, coordinating with federal, state, and private sector partners for the largest marine oil spill response in U.S. history. • Mobile Command Expertise: GST utilizes mobile command posts and advanced communications systems to rapidly establish incident command at disaster sites, often serving as the central hub for multi-agency coordination. • Annual Training Exercise: The team conducts an annual major exercise known as the "Gulf Guardian," simulating large-scale hazardous spill scenarios to maintain readiness and interoperability. • Specialized Equipment: GST is equipped with state-of-the-art oil skimmers, containment booms, portable decontamination units, and air monitoring equipment, allowing for rapid deployment anywhere in the Southeast U.S. and Caribbean. • Decorated Service: GST members have received numerous individual and unit commendations for their heroism and effectiveness during hurricanes Katrina and Rita, as well as international disaster response. • Legacy and Influence: The success and structure of the Gulf Strike Team led to the creation of other National Strike Teams (Atlantic and Pacific), making GST a model for hazardous material emergency response worldwide.
