Built at the Defoe Shipbuilding Company in Bay City, Michigan, she served primarily as a harbor tug and icebreaker in the Great Lakes region. During World War II, SHAWNEE was assigned to various duties, including convoy escort and search and rescue missions. After decades of service, she was decommissioned in 1970, marking over 30 years of vital support to Coast Guard operations.
