F TROOP, 8TH CAVALRY REGIMENT

• Origins in the Indian Wars: The 8th Cavalry Regiment was constituted in 1866, serving on the western frontier. F Troop (Company F) was among its original companies, engaging in campaigns against Native American tribes in the Southwest. • Apache Campaigns: F Troop participated in numerous actions during the Apache Wars, including the pursuit of legendary leaders such as Victorio and Geronimo in the late 19th century. • Buffalo Soldiers: The 8th Cavalry, including F Troop, was at times composed of African-American soldiers known as Buffalo Soldiers, who earned respect for their discipline and bravery. • Philippine-American War: Members of F Troop served in the Philippines following the Spanish-American War, fighting in actions against Filipino insurgents from 1899 to 1902. • World War II Service: The 8th Cavalry transitioned from horse-mounted to mechanized units during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater, including the liberation of the Philippines. • Korean War Valor: F Troop, as part of the 8th Cavalry, landed in Pusan in July 1950 and participated in the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, later fighting in major battles such as Unsan, where the regiment suffered heavy casualties. • Decorations and Honors: The 8th Cavalry Regiment has received numerous unit citations for valor, including Presidential Unit Citations for actions in Korea, some of which were earned by F Troop. • Vietnam War Deployments: F Troop was reorganized as an air cavalry troop, providing aerial reconnaissance and support for ground operations, earning several awards for gallantry. • Modern Reconnaissance: In recent decades, F Troop has often been designated as a reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA) troop, participating in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. • Regimental Traditions: F Troop maintains cavalry traditions such as the Stetson hat and spurs, and participates in regimental events like the Spur Ride, fostering esprit de corps and honoring its long, storied history.
