The first powered flight by the Wright brothers occurred on December 17, 1903 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
The first commercial flight took place on January 1, 1914 when a seaplane flew from Tampa to St. Petersburg, Florida.
During World War I, airplanes were primarily used for reconnaissance purposes, but their role expanded to include bombing and air-to-air combat.
Albert Berry made the first successful parachute jump from an airplane in 1912, paving the way for safer emergency exits for pilots and passengers.
