The 196th Assault Support Helicopter Company, known as the "Flippers," was activated during the Vietnam War to provide critical helicopter support to U.S. and allied ground forces. Formed in 1967, the unit was equipped primarily with CH-47 Chinook helicopters, performing troop transport, supply missions, and medevac operations throughout South Vietnam. The 196th played a vital role in numerous combat operations, often operating under hostile fire and challenging terrain. Its dedication and effectiveness earned the company several commendations before its deactivation in the early 1970s as the U.S. reduced its military presence in Vietnam.
