• Historic Lineage: The 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery (1-7 ADA) traces its origins to Battery A, 7th Regiment of Artillery, which was constituted on 8 March 1898 during the Spanish–American War era. • World War Service: The unit and its predecessor elements served in both World War I and World War II, providing coastal and anti-aircraft defense for the United States and overseas. • Cold War Role: During the Cold War, 1-7 ADA’s predecessor battalions were tasked with air defense of key strategic locations in Europe and the United States, adapting to new technologies like the Nike missile systems. • Patriot Missile System: Today, 1-7 ADA is equipped with the Patriot missile system, a highly advanced surface-to-air missile system capable of intercepting aircraft and ballistic missiles. • Operation Iraqi Freedom: The battalion deployed to Iraq in 2003 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, providing air and missile defense for coalition forces and critical assets. • Defender in Europe: 1-7 ADA is currently stationed in Germany as part of the US Army Europe, responsible for the air and missile defense of NATO allies and US interests on the continent. • Unit Motto: The battalion’s motto is “Sentinels of the Sky,” reflecting its mission to protect forces from aerial threats. • Multi-National Operations: 1-7 ADA regularly participates in joint and multinational exercises across Europe, working alongside NATO partners to improve interoperability and readiness. • Presidential Unit Citation: The battalion and its predecessor units have received several awards and citations, including the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action. • Continuous Modernization: 1-7 ADA is at the forefront of air defense modernization, regularly upgrading its systems and tactics to counter evolving aerial and missile threats.
