1:50th Mech Infantry

• Vietnam War Origins: The 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry (Mechanized) was originally activated in 1967 and deployed to Vietnam as part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, providing mechanized infantry capabilities during the height of the Vietnam War. • Combat Debut: The unit’s first major combat action occurred in the Bong Son Plain in 1967, where its M113 armored personnel carriers provided vital mobility and firepower in difficult terrain. • Tet Offensive Participation: 1/50th Mech played a key role in countering the 1968 Tet Offensive, conducting rapid reaction missions and helping to repel Viet Cong attacks across Binh Dinh Province. • Heavy Casualties: The battalion experienced significant losses in Vietnam, with over 100 soldiers killed in action and many more wounded during its deployment from 1967 to 1970. • Presidential Unit Citation: The unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism in action during the Battle of Tam Quan in December 1967. • Mechanized Infantry Innovation: As one of the first mechanized infantry battalions in Vietnam, 1/50th Mech pioneered combined arms tactics, integrating infantry, armor, and artillery in quick-reaction operations. • Transition to Training: After Vietnam, the battalion was reactivated at Fort Benning, Georgia, where it became a key training unit for new Army recruits, especially during the 1980s and 1990s. • Current Mission: Today, 1/50th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized) continues its legacy at Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), serving as a basic training battalion for new U.S. Army Infantry soldiers. • Distinctive Unit Insignia: The battalion’s distinctive insignia features a silver shield with a blue border, symbolizing the unit’s infantry heritage and mechanized capabilities. • Veteran Community: 1/50th Mech has an active veteran association, hosting regular reunions and maintaining a historical archive, fostering camaraderie among former and current members.
