1:46th Infantry

• Formation and Early History: The 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry Regiment (1/46th Infantry) was originally constituted in 1917 during World War I as part of the National Army. • World War II Service: Reactivated for World War II, the 46th Infantry Regiment served in Europe as part of the 5th Armored Division, participating in campaigns such as Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. • Vietnam War Deployment: 1/46th Infantry was assigned to the 198th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, and saw extensive combat in Vietnam from 1967 to 1971, particularly in Quang Ngai Province. • Firebase Mary Ann Attack: On March 28, 1971, Firebase Mary Ann, manned by elements of the 1/46th Infantry, suffered a devastating sapper attack, resulting in significant casualties and a major investigation into base security. • Medal of Honor Recipients: Several 1/46th Infantry soldiers have received high honors, including Specialist Four Donald Sloat, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in Vietnam. • Operation Wheeler/Wallowa: The battalion played a key role in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa, a large search and destroy mission against North Vietnamese Army forces in the I Corps area from 1967 to 1968. • Post-Vietnam Service: After Vietnam, 1/46th Infantry was inactivated and reactivated several times, serving in various roles, including as a training unit at Fort Knox and later Fort Benning. • Distinctive Unit Insignia: The unit’s insignia features a blue shield with a lion, symbolizing strength and valor, and represents its infantry heritage. • Modern Training Mission: Currently, 1/46th Infantry is part of the 197th Infantry Brigade at Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), Georgia, responsible for Initial Entry Training for new Army soldiers. • Motto: The battalion's motto is “Victory's Point,” reflecting its proud combat history and commitment to excellence.
