• Historic Lineage: The 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment (1/2 Cavalry) traces its origins back to the 2nd Dragoons, formed in 1836, making it one of the oldest continuously serving cavalry units in the U.S. Army. • Nickname - "Second Dragoons": Early on, the regiment adopted the nickname "Second Dragoons," which it still proudly uses today. • Mexican-American War: The unit fought in the Mexican-American War (1846–1848), participating in key battles such as Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, and Buena Vista. • Indian Wars: The 2nd Cavalry Regiment was heavily involved in the Indian Wars, serving across the American frontier and earning a reputation for toughness and mobility. • World War II: During World War II, the regiment was mechanized and served in the European Theater, notably liberating hostages from the Nazis at Castle Itter in Austria—a unique joint action with German Wehrmacht soldiers against the SS. • Cold War Service: Stationed in Germany during the Cold War, 1/2 Cavalry was a key reconnaissance and surveillance force along the Iron Curtain, helping deter Soviet aggression. • Bosnia and Kosovo Operations: 1/2 Cavalry participated in peacekeeping operations in Bosnia and Kosovo during the 1990s, helping to stabilize the Balkans after years of conflict. • Operation Iraqi Freedom: The squadron deployed multiple times to Iraq, engaging in both reconnaissance and combat operations, and earning the Presidential Unit Citation for its actions in Sadr City in 2008. • Modern Reconnaissance: Today, 1/2 Cavalry is equipped with Stryker armored vehicles and serves as a key reconnaissance force within the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, based in Vilseck, Germany. • Regimental Honors: The unit boasts more than 50 campaign streamers and numerous decorations, including the Valorous Unit Award and French Croix de Guerre, reflecting its distinguished service over nearly two centuries.
