1:197th Field Artillery

• Origins in the Revolutionary War: The 1st Battalion, 197th Field Artillery traces its lineage to the Portsmouth New Hampshire Artillery, originally formed in 1780, making it one of the oldest military units in the United States. • Nickname – “The Seacoast Artillery”: The unit has long been known as the “Seacoast Artillery” due to its early role defending the New England coastline. • World War I Service: The 197th Field Artillery served as part of the 26th “Yankee” Division in France, participating in major campaigns such as the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. • World War II Campaigns: The battalion fought in the Pacific Theater, including in New Guinea and the Philippines, providing crucial artillery support during amphibious assaults. • Decorations and Citations: The unit has received numerous decorations, including the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for its actions in the liberation of the Philippines. • Cold War Air Defense: During the Cold War, the 1/197th was equipped with 155mm self-propelled howitzers and later, advanced rocket artillery, adapting to evolving military technology. • Global War on Terror Deployments: Members of the battalion have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, providing artillery support and conducting security operations in support of coalition missions. • State and National Disaster Response: The 1/197th has been activated multiple times to assist in natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina relief operations in 2005. • Modernization: The unit currently operates the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), making it one of the most modern artillery battalions in the Army National Guard. • Community and Heritage: The battalion maintains strong ties to New Hampshire communities, celebrating its heritage with annual events, parades, and partnerships with local organizations.
