• Origins in the Cold War: The 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), or 10th SFGA, was activated on June 19, 1952, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as the first Special Forces group in the U.S. Army, designed to conduct unconventional warfare behind enemy lines in the event of Soviet aggression in Europe. • OSS Heritage: Many of the original members of the 10th SFGA were veterans of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the World War II-era organization that conducted espionage and guerrilla warfare. • First Deployed to Germany: In 1953, the Group was split, with one battalion sent to Bad Tölz, West Germany. This positioned the 10th SFGA at the front lines of the Cold War, ready to organize resistance in case of a Soviet invasion. • Green Beret Authorization: The 10th SFGA was among the first units to receive authorization to wear the now-iconic Green Beret, a symbol of U.S. Army Special Forces. • Involvement in Early Counter-Terrorism: The 10th SFGA played a pioneering role in developing U.S. military counter-terrorism doctrine during the 1970s, and its members have contributed to the formation of elite units like Delta Force. • Operation Provide Comfort (1991): After the Gulf War, 10th SFGA soldiers led humanitarian operations to protect and assist the Kurdish population in Northern Iraq, preventing a potential genocide and setting a standard for modern civil affairs missions. • Balkans Deployments: Throughout the 1990s, 10th SFGA teams deployed to Bosnia, Kosovo, and Macedonia, where they trained local forces and supported peacekeeping and stability operations. • Post-9/11 Operations: The Group was among the first U.S. units to deploy to Afghanistan after the September 11 attacks and has since conducted numerous missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa. • Specialty in Europe and Africa: While all Special Forces groups have global capabilities, 10th SFGA’s primary regional focus is Europe and Africa, working closely with NATO allies and African partner nations. • Motto and Legacy: The Group’s motto, “De Oppresso Liber” (“To Free the Oppressed”), reflects its mission to empower local forces and populations— a core principle of Special Forces operations since its founding.
