• Formation & Mission: The 711th Human Performance Wing (711 HPW) was established in 2008 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, with the primary mission to advance human performance and human systems integration for the U.S. Air Force. • Unique Integration: The 711 HPW is unique in that it combines science, medicine, and technology, integrating the Airman Systems Directorate (RH) and the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM). • Response to COVID-19: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 711 HPW played a critical role in developing and disseminating medical guidance and protective measures for Air Force personnel worldwide. • Human-Machine Teaming: The Wing conducts cutting-edge research on human-machine teaming, including how pilots interact with advanced AI systems in aircraft and control stations. • En Route Care Training: USAFSAM, under the 711 HPW, is home to the Department of Defense’s largest aeromedical evacuation and en route care training programs. • Research Facilities: The wing features advanced laboratories, including hypobaric and hyperbaric chambers, motion capture studios, and simulators to study human physiology and performance under extreme conditions. • Global Health Impact: The 711 HPW supports global medical outreach and disaster response, sending teams to assist with humanitarian missions and international health crises. • Neuroscience Leadership: The Wing is a leader in cognitive neuroscience, studying fatigue, stress, and decision-making to enhance warfighter effectiveness and resilience. • Human Factors Engineering: The 711 HPW develops cockpit designs, wearable sensors, and life support systems that improve safety and efficiency for Air Force personnel. • Historical Legacy: While the 711 HPW was established in 2008, its USAFSAM component traces its heritage back to 1918, making it one of the oldest institutions dedicated to aerospace medicine in the world.
