• Vietnam War Beginnings: The 366th Security Police Squadron was originally activated during the Vietnam War to provide base security at Da Nang Air Base, one of the most attacked U.S. installations in Southeast Asia. • Sappers Attack of 1965: The unit faced its first major test during a 1965 sapper attack, where enemy forces breached the wire and inflicted damage, but were ultimately repelled by the 366th defenders. • Nickname – “Gunfighters”: The squadron’s parent wing, the 366th, was known as the "Gunfighters," and the Security Police adopted the moniker due to their aggressive defense posture. • First Use of K-9 Units in Vietnam: The 366th was among the pioneers in combat deployment of military working dogs for base defense, revolutionizing Air Force security tactics. • Operation Safe Side: Members of the 366th participated in "Operation Safe Side," a program that introduced light infantry tactics and heavy weapons to Air Force security forces, enhancing their combat effectiveness. • Role in Tet Offensive: During the 1968 Tet Offensive, the 366th Security Police played a crucial role in defending Da Nang Air Base from intense enemy assaults, preventing it from falling. • Decorations and Awards: The squadron earned several Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards with Valor for their performance under fire and commitment to duty in Vietnam. • Post-Vietnam Relocation: After Vietnam, the squadron was relocated to Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, where it continues to provide security and law enforcement. • Modern Deployments: The 366th has deployed personnel to support Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom, maintaining a strong expeditionary tradition. • Heritage and Legacy: Today, the 366th Security Forces Squadron (as it is now known) honors its Vietnam roots with an annual ceremony, keeping alive the memory of those who served and fell in defense of their base.
