20th Civil Engineer Squadron

• Origins: The 20th Civil Engineer Squadron (20 CES) was originally activated as the 20th Installations Squadron on 19 August 1948, supporting the 20th Fighter-Bomber Wing. • Cold War Deployments: During the Cold War, the 20 CES played a vital role in maintaining and upgrading airfields and facilities at several bases in Europe, including RAF Wethersfield, RAF Woodbridge, and RAF Upper Heyford in England. • Gulf War Support: The squadron provided critical engineering support during Operation Desert Storm, deploying personnel and equipment to the Middle East to construct and repair facilities. • Stateside Home: Since 1993, the 20 CES has been stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, where it supports the 20th Fighter Wing and maintains the infrastructure for one of the largest F-16 combat wings in the world. • Disaster Response: Members of the 20 CES have deployed to assist with disaster relief efforts, including hurricane recovery operations and rebuilding after natural disasters both in the U.S. and abroad. • “Prime BEEF” Teams: The squadron’s “Prime Base Engineer Emergency Force” (Prime BEEF) teams are trained to rapidly deploy worldwide to build, repair, and maintain airbases under combat and contingency conditions. • Environmental Stewardship: The 20 CES leads environmental initiatives at Shaw AFB, including wildlife management, hazardous waste disposal, and energy conservation projects. • Firefighting and Emergency Services: The squadron operates Shaw AFB’s fire department, providing emergency response not only on base but also supporting surrounding communities when needed. • Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD): 20 CES houses a renowned EOD flight, whose technicians neutralize unexploded ordnance and respond to bomb threats regionally and overseas. • Awards and Recognition: The 20 CES has earned numerous Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, reflecting its excellence in mission support, innovation, and readiness.
